Unable to flash my TX2 with Jetpack 3.0 after repeated attempts

I am unable to flash my TX2 with Jetpack 3.0 after repeated attempts. Both host and target are connected to router via ethernet, USBMicro-B is connected to TX2 and host, and I have followed the procedure to place system in Force USB Recovery Mode.

During a flash only the micro-B USB connector matters…you can safely ignore network connections until flash completes and networking for package downloads is setting up.

One thing which is fairly subtle is that between every command to flash or clone the Jetson must have recovery mode restarted, e.g., recovery button held down and reset button pressed between flash attempts. So if you tried to flash twice without setting the Jetson to recovery mode between attempts it will always fail.

The first thing to check is that before each flash attempt make sure it is put back into recovery mode, then verify that this shows output from the PC host before running the flash:

lsusb -d 0955:7c18

Can you verify that the lsusb command shows the Jetson present prior to the flash attempt?

I was able to move past the issue mentioned above. However, I am still unable to complete the flashing process and following is the log:

Notice that the BootRom not running line is around 1.1 seconds into the log, which is about right. My system shows this at 0.7 seconds, so must be a bit faster than yours. The next message does not occur for about 5 more seconds…how long did you wait after BootRom not running? Things were correct up to this point.

The flashing process does not proceed past ‘[ 1.1385 ] BootRom is not running’ and nothing else is logged on repeated attempts. I have waited several minutes on each occasion past the last message to see if it would continue.

This is an odd error. On your host, if you run dmesg prior to starting the flash, and then again while it is hanging, is there any kind of error message showing up?

This is the cause…USB on the host is failing during the flash. It is hard to say though why it is failing, just that it is in bulk transfer mode and then times out. Is this a VM? VMs do this a lot.

Anyone have a list of the meaning of the return values on a TX2 flash?

The host itself has USB issues, else dmesg would not have given the driver error. Same question…is the host a VM? VMs most often have USB issues.

I was able to flash my TX2. Following are the details associated with my preflash setup:

Host:

Mac Mini Server (Late 2012) with macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6
VirtualBox 5.1.24 r117012 (Qt5.6.2) with ubuntu 16.04 LTS
VirtualBox 5.1.24 Extension Pack

Configure Virtualbox USB settings via the Devices->USB->USB Settings menu:

  1. Enable USB Controller.
  2. Select USB 3.0 (xHCI) Controller.
  3. Once the TX2 in recovery mode, confirm NVIDIA Corp. APX appears in a lsusb command listing
    and is check marked via Devices->USB menu.
  4. Add NVIDIA Corp. APX to the list of USB Device Filters. Set the ‘remote’ setting to ‘any’ for this specific filter.

Target:

Jetson TX2

Connectivity:

Host and Target connected to internet connected router via ethernet cables.
Host and Target connected via USB Micro-B cable
Host and Target connected via USB to TTL Serial Cable
