VS 2012 Android Project (External Build System) unable to debug

I’m using Visual Studio 2012 and I’m trying to debug a project build by our company in-house toolchain. The app is a NativeActivity. To debug the app I created a “Android Project (External Build System)”. All paths in “Debugging” are set but I’m unable to deploy and launch the app. “Start Debugging” will result immediately in the message: “Object reference not set to an instance of an object.” and nothing else is happening.
There are no spaces in the paths. The android version on the target debug device is 4.4.2.
