Wifi AP hotspot doesn't start on some boots

Hello!

I have a problem that wifi AP hotspot cannot start on some boots but can on others. The problem started quite suddenly and I don’t think I actually changed something software side.

As you can see it just loops. The wifi icon also keeps refreshing but nothing happens. The first difference is this dhd_ndo_remove_ip - the correct one doesn’t have it and in the failed one it goes down hill from there. The only mention of that is here: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1024758/jetson-tx1/tx1-wifi-problem-unable-to-connect-any-router/2 and there they just mention RMA. Do I also have a hardware problem? And how to test it? And why it works on some boots and not on others? While booted I cannot make it start by restarting interfaces, restarting networking or switching back op_mode.

I enabled hotspot with setting op_mode in /etc/modprobe.d/bcmdhd.conf and then configuring through GUI. I haven’t trying reflashing yet, but the whole setup will take a long time for me so I would want to take that as the last option.

Any help would be appreciated.

Neighbor discovery offload (NDO) feature is trying to offload IPv6 address for neighbor discovery to FW. Since this is not supported in FW, it is returning -23 as not supported. This should not cause error.

Could you share how you set up your wifiAP (configuration and steps)? What test were you conducting in above log? Did you keep turning on/off of wifi AP ?

I didn’t conduct a test. I just booted. It keeps turning on and off by itself.

I configured wifi by opening /etc/modprobe.d/bcmdhd.conf and adding op_mode=2. Then I did the rest via GUI by Adding a new connection, setting it to Hotspot, filling in SSID and wpa2 password.

What the two logs show are two different boots. In one it works and I can connect to the hotspot. In the other it doesn’t create the hotspot and wifi keeps restarting. And the only way to make it work again is by rebooting. At least nothing else I tried worked. This led me to believe it might be a hw fault. But I want to know if there is additional tests I could try.

The the rest after NDO part also seem to mean that it is just turning off (removes IP’s, deleting a “station” and turning wifi off). So there is no error? It just turns off? From timestamps you can see the whole cycle is 1.5s.

It doesn’t break while booted though, so only turning on is the issue. Otherwise one could think it is some power issue.

So the only thing you do in previous comment is to turn on/off wifi “once” after boot up? Are you using nvidia devkit or custom carrier board?

I am not sure if it is a hardware issue. Do you only have one tx2 module that hits this error? How is the error rate?

I didn’t manually turn on or off wifi after boot. It does it by itself each 1.5s. I can keep it up for an hour and give you a log if you want. It just keeps repeating.

I use CTI Orbitty board. I can try changing the board as well. Jetpack 3.2.

So this error is something like below

Working case:
Turn on wifi first time-> working fine -> no error after then

Not working case:
Turn on wifi first time -> error occurs -> wifi error keeps repeating with “wifi_platform_set_power” on/off message

Is it correct?

Please make sure you can still reproduce this issue with pure Jetpack3.2 BSP and with nvidia developer kit. It would help us to reproduce this error(if it is not hardware related). Thanks.

Internet also didn’t work with ethernet until I disabled wifi, but I guess that is to be expected. Now I’m actually writing this post on this Jetson through ethernet. I will clone it into another Jetson (because I need one working) and reflash this one.

Damn, I hoped it was a hardware problem but now it doesn’t seem to be. I cloned that TX2:

sudo ./flash.sh -r -k APP -G system.img jetson-tx2 mmcblk0p1

And put it in another:

sudo ./flash.sh -r orbitty mmcblk0p1

And the second now had the same issue. So unless I cloned a hardware issue I feel that there could be a deeper software problem. As dmesg doesn’t tell me anything and I don’t know how to find more detailed logs, the only thing I can do is to reflash one of the Jetsons from scratch.

Could antennas break wifi in a way? Because I cloned it and put it in our device, which has extended wifi antennas (additional meter of wire) - maybe they are defective that causes a hardware problem? The Jetson I took out and tested on the table that also had the same issue was using the dev kit provided antennas though, but maybe they were already busted by that point? The weird thing is that it works just fine on some boots, but goes into wifi restart loop in another.

Alright, back to hardware. I just reflashed from scratch, didn’t install anything (except updates provided by ubuntu software update), then enabled hotspot. Worked fine once, then on restart I have the same issue. The Jetson is still plugged in the devkit. Now I’m stumped. I can replicate the same hardware issue on two Jetsons?

Is there a test I can do to be certain it is a hardware issue? Or what hw issue specifically? Because dmesg just tells me it turns on, then turns off. No errors or anything.

  1. What “hardware” are you talking about in above comment, two different tx2 module or two different carrier board?

  2. The full dmesg seems have more info to check, but it is being cut due to the length limitation of forum. Could you share it as an attachment?

  3. Also, could you share how you setup your wifi AP? Are you using NetworkManager(ubuntu GUI)?

  1. I tried two TX2 modules. I cloned one, then put on another. The second module now had the same issue. All of that happened on devkit board. It had the same issue when being totally “new”, as in I didn’t install anything except some ubuntu updates it showed at boot.
  2. I’ll try getting the log again.
  3. I use NetworkManager. Edit connections -> Add -> WiFi -> Mode Hotspot -> Fill in SSID and wifi security to wpa2 personal. That’s it.

I did found that this only fails if op_mode=2 is set during the boot. If I set op_mode=0 by default, then boot, then set op_mode=2 then it works fine. So a temporary workaround I do now is have op_mode=0 by default and then set op_mode=2 via a systemd service at boot. That has worked for now. So it might be that it tries setting to hotspot too early or before something else is initialized.

Do you flash the second tx2 from scratch as well or using clone?

If this happens to both tx2 modules, it may be a bug. I could also try it on my device as well.

The reproduce steps seems simple… set up the wifi AP through networkmanager and reboot many times, is it correct? Anything missing?

Enable hotspot at boot by opening /etc/modprobe.d/bcmdhd.conf and adding new line “options bcmdhd op_mode=2”. Then try rebooting several times. Some times it will start hotspot correctly, other times it should go into wifi restart loop - at least if you can replicate my issue.

We notice this problem is from dnsmasq. Please try to dump the syslog when you hit the problem.
If we have same error, there should be “dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket for 10.42.0.1: Address already in use”.

Sorry I didn’t reply earlier. The only thing that worked was to call this at every boot:

I’m seeing the same issueson L4T 32.2.X when I do
