Default IP not available error while trying to install Jetson SDK components

I am flashing a Jetson AGX Xavier with Jetpack 4.6.2 using sdkmanager. The device is connected to my host PC (running Ubuntu 18.04) using the USB-C cable provided.

I have successfully flashed the system with the new OS, however, I am unable to continue the following step to install the SDK components.

I have tried re-flashing in automatic and manual mode to no avail.

The ipv4 is set to the default 192.168.55.1.

How may I solve this issue?

(I am not sure if this is relevant, but I had initially installed Jetpack 5.0.1 onto the Xavier that installed fully without issue. However, I need to run ubuntu 18.04 since I am currently working on ros melodic. )

Is your host able to ping your jetson with this 192.186.55.1 IP? If not, then it won’t work.

Basically, the sdkmanager is just using network to send data to devcie.

If usb network cannot work, you can also use ethernet or any kind of connection which your host can ping the device.

The device did not respond to being pinged while attached to the usb. Tried to connect both to each other directly through an ethernet cable and still could not ping it.

Connected the xavier to the internet through an ethernet cable and ran ifconfig to get the ip address on the network. Manage to ping it with the host pc.

sdkmanager was still on the detect device section, so I just set it to ethernet connection and plugged the ipadress of the xavier and it got through.

Had to do some apt-get update/upgrade and fix some of the repository links, but it managed to complete the install.

Scratch that.

After a reboot of the device, it now doesn’t load at all. Shows the Nvidia logo, then the boot messages and just goes into a black screen.

Tried to re-flash the system again and it still cause the same issue (i skipped trying to install the sdk components since it was still having installation issues)

Not sure what to do from here.

Can you post a full serial console boot log? Also, can you still log in via serial console? If so, also post the output of “ifconfig” and “route”. When the AGX is fully booted, regardless of whether you can log in to it, monitor “dmesg --follow” on the host PC, and watch what log appends as you plug in the USB cable to the host PC (post what log shows up upon plugin).

I almost forgot: If you can log in to the Jetson, then once the USB is connected to the host PC, also include “ifconfig” and “route” command results from the host PC side.

In case you don’t know how to dump serial console.

I’ll try it next week when I get back to the lab.

Going to try and see if using a different host pc changes anything first (but I doubt it).

Hello again.

Tried to reflash the system. Did a clean resintall of sdkmanger and it the installation progressed without issue HOWEVER when actually trying to do the sdk components, it started the process and then instantly completes to a succesful install. I am inclined to believe that somehow, the sdk tools installation is corrupted and isn’t getting cleared out (sdk manager doesn’t detect it as being installed either.)

Can’t seem to get the pc to work with minicom atm. Going to try to see if getting a micro usb cable changes anything tomorrow (only have the type-c cable here)

The sdk is firstly installed to your host and then send to your host and then install it with dpkg command.

If you think the file is corrupted, please remove them (deb files) from your host and let sdkmanager download it again.

I did do that actually.

Removed the old sdk and all files associated with it.

Downloaded and installed the .deb file from the nvidia website

Redownloaded the OS and all the other jetson files through sdkmanager.

And …?? The issue is still there?

Yes, the issue is still there (sorry if that wasn’t clear).

  1. I had uninstalled sdkmanager, removed all files associated with it (includng jetson 4.6.2 and all other files it downloaded)

  2. I reinstalled sdkmanager by downloading the .deb file from the nvidia website and followed the onsite instructions.

  3. I connected the jetson xavier to my host pc (a desktop running ubuntu 18.04) using the provided usb-c cable

  4. I launch the setup and go through the installation process, choosing to install Jetson 4.6.2.

  5. sdkmanager flashes the OS without issue, but cannot detect the jetson (default ip is not available error) so I can’t install the sdk tools. I decided to click skip as right now I just want to get the it running again.

  6. Finished the installation and plug the jetson to a monitor. It loads the scrolling boot message and then just leads to a black screen again.

Could not get minicom to detect the usb connection, even with a micro-usb B cable.

I gave up and tried to flash it with jetpack 5.0.2 (newest version)…and it worked just fine. No installation errors, no hiccups. Can boot and reboot without issue. Only problem is I am now on ubuntu 20.04, instead of ubuntu 18.04 (but at least I can rule out hardware faults)

What do you want to use here? Do you still want to use jp4.6.2 or you are okay with jp5?

There are multiple issues here which are not always fatal but may affect the debug here.

  1. You said the minicom is not able to work. Is it even happened on jp5 which you said the board can boot? If it is also failed on jp5, then mostly like your micro usb cable and setup for minicom are wrong. For example, are you sure the micro usb cable has data line instead of only power line?

  2. If you still want us to help check jp4.6.2 issue, then you need to fix (1) first. It looks like the process to install sdk was not even starting.

  3. It is possible that boot issue in jp4.6.2 only means the desktop GUI is failing to show. Since you don’t have uart console to check, we would never know.

I would prefer to go back to 4.6.2 if possible, but I’m somewhat burned out from trying to fix it atm.

I’m not sure on the cable (but I would guess its only a power line). I will try it once I can get a proper data cable.

Got minicom working (it was a cable issue).

The jetson worked ok when it was on 5.0.2. Re-flashed it back to 4.6.2. SDK manager did not have an issue conecting to the device when attempting to install the SDK components BUT it gave an APT error. Clicked retry and it completed the installation near instantly.

But as before, its back to the black out screen when loading.

Just to clarify, the current situation is still desktop GUI fails to launch, right?

Is the monitor natively HDMI or DisplayPort? EDID is basically the plug-n-play reply from the monitor as to what its specs are. Older monitor types, e.g., VGA or DVI analog, do not have the ability to reply to EDID queries. If this is an actual HDMI or DisplayPort (both have EDID, as well as DVI-D), then the EDID failure indicates something wrong with i2c configuration (which is the protocol used for EDID).
