Jetson Nano not booting, showing only nvidia logo on screen, Serial logs says MMC: no card present

I am trying to boot jetson nano development kit. After flashing memory card during boot time it shows Nvidia logo on screen connected over HDMI and does not do any thing. When I connected serial cable to check logs it show below output which i think is the problem. I have also attached full logs below that.

Brief message from serial console logs:
MMC: no card present
** Bad device mmc 1 **

Steps followed:
Burned memory card using getting started link and used balena etcher on Ubuntu 18.04 host.
Balena etcher validated image after burning on memory card and showed success validation message.
Used barrel power supply adapter with 5V 4A. Jumper J48 shorted.
I have tried changing memory cards / readers but same error comes for all cases. I have also tried to burn memory card from different ubuntu 18.04 machine but same issue happens.

Detailed serial console logs:

Because there is no local disk it is trying to boot from the network, but you did not set up to boot from network (very few people do). If this is a dev kit, do you have another SD card you can try? If not a dev kit, then perhaps the internal eMMC is bad.

Thanks for reply. Yes it is dev kit and I have already tried with couple of memory cards but ended up with these logs only. Can I boot from network even if memory card slot does not work ?

Technically, with a lot of work, you could. However, problems leading up to failure to boot on SD would probably exist when booting from network as well. You could try, but I doubt you would find the results acceptable.

I have to think that something about your process for creating the SD card is at issue, or that if all of the tested SD cards are the same brand/model, then that particular brand/model might be at issue. It isn’t all that unusual for a number of SD card brands to work for data, but fail when used for boot. Someone from NVIDIA may have an idea of how to test if it is just the SD card, or if perhaps there is an actual need for RMA. Either way you will want to list which brands and sizes of SD card you tried.

Thanks for suggestion, I have tried below memory cards.

  • SanDisk Ultra 16 GB class 10 Micro SD HC
  • SanDisk Ultra 32 GB class 10 Micro SD HC
I am working to get other brand’s memory card, once I get it I will check with that.
But as of now would you please suggest from logs if memory card slot is ok or not on board.
For jetson nano, is u-boot is loaded from memory card ? If so memory card slot should not be an issue but memory card itself or the flashing process.

I could see the possibility that 16 GB would not be enough space, but probably would not cause complete failure. The 32 GB card would definitely be enough space, but is the same basic model as the other SanDisk SD card, so if that particular brand/model is a problem, then you wouldn’t know. On the other hand, SanDisk is usually a good brand for this, and I don’t have any reason to believe that brand would be a problem.

I am thinking most likely there is something going on with the flash procedure or flash content, although the “MMC: no card
” part could be actual hardware failure. Testing another brand of card would be a good next step, but it may be that someone else will need to help to verify if there is a hardware problem, e.g., bent pin in the SD card slot.

I have changed board and all worked fine now. Mostly that should be a problem with memory card socket.
Thanks for all reply and guiding in correct direction. Issue is now resolved with new hardware.
