MSS: Failed to initialize SDRAM

I am attempting to flash a Jetson Orin NX however it fails with a USB timeout error. After some investigation, the kernel logs show that it failed to initialize the SDRAM. I found a closed topic on this issue already, however it was not resolved (Cannot flash Orin NX, Failed to initialize SDRAM)

Like the person in the forum, I am on an Ubuntu 22.04 machine flashing a 5.1.3 Jetpack version. I haven’t had any issues flashing other Jetsons.

A few questions:

  1. Is there a way for me to easily verify that the issue is hardware?
  2. Is this a known issue for Orin NX?
  3. If it is a know issue, will there be a patch/fix for this? If not, what is the likelihood of this issue on any given Orin NX modules?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Could you try to flash the latest JP version (JP 5.1.5) to cross check whether the issue exists?

Thanks

Hi David,

I am using a custom carrier board (Forecr) and they don’t have JP 5.1.5 JP support (only up to 5.1.4 for 5.x). They do have support for JP 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2. I will give these a try and get back to you with what I find.

Update: I attempted to flash JP 6.x but experienced the same issue.

Hi,

Do you flash with JP 6.2 version?
If no, please try flash JP6.2 because it might be related to PCN.

Thanks

I also tried with 6.2 but failed in the same way.

Hi,

I see. Thank you for you feedback.
Some questions to confirm

  • Is you orin nx using a dev kit or custom board?

If using custom board, please try to use the dev kit to cross check it.

Thanks

Hi David,

Sorry for the late reply.

I am using a custom carrier board (Forecr). I am in contact with their support team as well.

An update on my end:

The SOM booted up normally today and was on for about 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, it failed with the following error:

When it rebooted, it came up with the same SDRAM initialization error.

Not sure if that’s board or module issue, you ,may try to get other device to test.
