Reflash of Jetson AGX to upgrade ubuntu version, unable to "install SDK componenets on your ... Module"

Attempted to upgrade an AGX to ubuntu 20.04 (jetpack 5.1.1), host machine is running 20.04

  • changed the repo location in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nvidia-l4t-apt-source.list from 32.4 to 35.3
  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt dist-upgrade

During the process received this error:

started down the sdk flash path and made it to the screen on the host machine
with the statement:

SDK manager is about to install SDK components on your Jetson AGX Xavier Module.

on the AGX machine I created a username/password and it starts “installing” then stops with no error or warning and no Ubuntu desktop. initiating a restart from this state results in the same screens/actions.

on the host machine, the SDK manager is unable to connect to the machine. additionally an terminal SSH is unable to connect either.

I attempted another reflash with the SDK manager with the same result.

I added the sdk logs

Jetson SDK (target) installation issues
Q1. I cannot connect to Jetson device after flashing. I’ve created new user, and jetson device has boot up. Ubuntu desktop is shown on HDMI output. USB cable is connected between host and Jetson device. What to do next?
A: SDK Manager relies on usb-device mode to set up network connection between host and target. Please see Jetson usb-device mode issues section in this FAQ for more details.

which seems to describe the issue, with no solution. After searching I found this (which isn’t linked and is not a FAQ, @yasenhu789 )

however I think the host is setup correctly, seems like ssh is not installed on the AGX for it to communicate with.

I have the usb from the host, plugged into the AGX on the front (side opposite the power cable connection).

I started the flash process over (third time) and selected jetpack 5.1 this time and instead of Pre-Config for OEM configuration, chose Runtime.
Now after the flashing, on the device I have a prompt for accepting the L4T EUL agreement, which didn’t happen before. Before it went directly to a choose language page and also skipped the where are you? and the install chromium pages

when trying to install chromium, received this error on the device (photo to text, so might be some incorrectness to this)

I’m not positive, but I think that method of upgrade from L4T R32.x (Ubuntu 18.04 plus NVIDIA drivers) to L4T R35.x (Ubuntu 20.04) is probably not supported. Most likely you need to flash again, although you could clone first if you have something you want to save.

That’s what I finally figured, and have since tried 3 flashes…without success.

What is your host PC Ubuntu version? Are you using the latest JetPack release? Is this a dev kit, or does it use a third party carrier board?

Host is on 20.04, I just grabbed the SDK yesterday so I’m assuming everything is the latest… 5.1.1.? on a devkit.

Yes, that is currently the most recent release.

I don’t know if this means anything, but perhaps your host is enforcing SELinux, which in turn would possibly cause failure (the message is probably just a warning though; unless you enabled SELinux to enforcing, then this is just a warning without getting in the way):

SDKM has an export logs button on it. You might want to export the logs and attach those to the forums. Someone from NVIDIA could probably help with those logs.

So is your host really not able ssh this interface?

How about just use wired ethernet work to install them?

hhmmmm, ill see if i can go down that rabbithole… Ive pasted sections from the logs and uploaded 2 full zip files of them.

yes the host can not ssh, but i belive the reason is that the device never really installs, well, anything. so ssh is not on the device. everytime the device boots up, it is like it is the first time… looking for a new username/password

Hi,

Actually you can use the micro usb port (if this is NV devkit) to access the board with serial console. Please be aware that this interface is only to control the board. Not able to install things through it.

Also, if you keep reflashing the board and it all tells you the user name and password is not set correctly, please “remove” the downloaded BSP on your host machine. Let sdkmanager download it again to make sure you are not installing the corrupted BSP again and again.

ok, deleted everything on host, started over, tried 5.0.2 this time to see if there is a difference and selected runtime again… everything feels about the same. Created a new username/password. Can ping the device on 192.168.55.1, but cannot ssh into it.

[ 30.321927] Please complete system configuration setup on desktop to proceed...

I’m out of ideas… I tried manually flashing 5.1.1 to the device through the terminal, same result. Is there a reason that jetpack 5 would not work on an AGX? I would like to return to jetpack 4, but the sdk does not support that, would that have to be done manually as well?

any other paths to look at?

Hi,

Let me ask another question here. Is your problem here that OEM config manual does not show up on your desktop all the time? I mean did you see any window comes in first boot to ask you to configure account/password?

According to the log, you didn’t finish the system configuration.

If you didn’t flash and boot jetson before, let me go through the process first

  1. A pure jetpack will not have a default account and password.

  2. In your first boot, you need to configure it. Otherwise the system will wait there and no other service will be enabled. The services here include the sshd too.

  3. If your issue is you keep not able to see the user account setting GUI, then please flash jp5.1.1 on your board again.

  4. If you cannot upgrade jp5.1.1, there is a script called “l4t_create_default_users.sh” inside your BSP folder. This script can configure a user account and password so that you don’t need to do (2) in first boot anymore.
A BSP folder is the whole driver package installed by sdkmanager. It will be on your host with default path ~/nvidia.

The first boot on the device always brings up the traditional “Create username/password”, and when I finish the GUI configuration it appears like it is starting to “install” but eventually just sits there with the Ubuntu install GUI that has nothing actionable on it (see pictures above). I’ve flashed 5.1.1 twice, once through the sdk and once through a terminal command line and I’ve tried the other jetpack 5 versions available through the sdk… all the same.

So yes, the system configuration is not being complete… for some reason the flash is not providing the necessary software for that to happen.

I assume to run that script needs to be run in the recovery mode? If all it does is create a name/password, can’t see how that will do anything different then the GUI process, but will see what happens.

Here is the minicom log from the device boot ups.
minicom.cap (104.9 KB)

unfortunately it “stops” showing output when the GUI starts on the device. I guess I could record a video showing it not doing anything in the GUI other than collect the language, location, name/pass, and pretend to “install” something.

Hi,

No, you think it wrong. That script is run on your host. SDKM will install the BSP to your host first. There is a “rootfs” installed too. This rootfs is just a Linux file system.
The create default user script is to install a default user account and password to this rootfs.

Thus, actually it has nothing to do with recovery mode. You don’t even need a board to run this script. This is just pure work on your host machine.

In your next flash, this new rootfs will be flashed to your jetson and it will have default user account there in the beginning. So basically we will bypass what stucks you right now.
