Unable to Save USD Files to AWS Nucleus from USD Composer

Hello everyone,

I previously posted a question regarding an issue I am facing with saving USD files to AWS Nucleus from USD Composer. ( [Nucleus Enterprise on AWS] Issues with Saving USD Files on Nucleus Server in AWS. Failed to save layer sample.usd due to permission issue - #8 by sho2125 )
After further investigation, I have discovered the following:

  • I am able to save files to localhost, but unable to save to AWS Nucleus.
  • When attempting to save to AWS Nucleus from USD Composer, the file is created but it is empty. Upon editing the created USD file, only the header is present, with no content below it.
  • The error log indicates that the [omni.client.plugin]'s omni1CreateAsset is failing, which seems to be causing the save operation to fail. Below is the relevant portion of the error log. :

[Info] [omni.client.plugin] Tick: provider_nucleus: Failed omni1CreateAsset(omniverse://nucleus.mycompany-omniverse.com/Users/useruser/test.usd):
[Error] [omni.usd] ERROR! Failed to save layer omniverse://nucleus.mycompany-omniverse.com/Users/useruser/test.usd due to permission issue.
[Info] [omni.usd] USD saving failed

I am not sure how to resolve it.

Additional Information:
AWS OS:
Reverse proxy server : Amazon Linux 2
Nucleus stack server : Ubuntu 22.04

  • Steps Taken:
    1. Verified that saving to localhost works.
    2. Attempted to save to AWS Nucleus multiple times with the same result.
    3. Checked permissions on AWS Nucleus but did not find any obvious issues.
    4. For testing purposes, I temporarily opened all ports to try saving the USD file, but I still encountered the error.
    5. I can save a file to the OS desktop and then copy that file to the desired Nucleus location. However, I cannot create and save a file directly from USD Composer to the Nucleus server on AWS. Additionally, while I can open existing USD files, I cannot edit and overwrite them on the AWS Nucleus server. This method is inconvenient.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or suggestions on how to resolve this issue. Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,

I just want to ask some clarification questions.

  1. When you say “localhost” do you mean the localhost drive on the AWS machine, or your actual local machine?
  2. When you say save to AWS Nucleus, if that save command coming from USD Composer running ON the AWS instance, or your local machine?
  3. You are on Nucleus Enterprise correct? This is not the workstation version?
  4. Are you on our OFFICIAL AMI from NVIDIA?
AWS Linux AMI for development: AWS Marketplace: NVIDIA Omniverse™ Development Workstation (Linux)
AWS Linux AMI for enterprise: AWS Marketplace: NVIDIA Omniverse™ Enterprise Workstation (Linux)
  5. Are you an Enterprise Client? If so you may want to contact Enterprise support and make a ticket.
  6. Finally, although we want to fix your error and get you working on Nucleus, I have to ask, why your workflow requires it on AWS. Can you not also use the normal OS of the EC2? What advantages are you looking for in Nucleus?

Verifying localhost isn’t what you need. You need to validate you can connect to the Nucleus browser according to your IP or hostname from within the VM you’re running Nucleus on, as well as your machine you’re trying to connect your Kit app from.

You should be able to put nucleus.mycompany-omniverse.com in your browser, and it will prompt you to authenticate, and take you to the Navigator application. Please validate you can upload data through that Navigator in both those situations.

Also, for your Kit application, please enable verbose logging --vv so we can get a clear understanding of where it’s failing.

Also, please validate you followed all the steps when setting up the reverse proxy, as this is what Nucleus supports.

Also, please validate all your ports are open correctly, per the docs, specifically the LFT ports. This issues you’re seeing is consistent with issues we’ve seen with 3rd party reverse proxies being used, and LFT not being accessible.

Also, you can test your connectivity as described here.
Connectivity Testing — Omniverse Nucleus

Just to add you must use ONLY the NGINX Reverse Proxy Provided. You cannot use an Amazon Reverse Proxy. Our NGINX RP is provided as part of the software stack you downloaded from NGC. It must be used.

Thanks for checking this issue.
Here is the response in English with a natural flow:

  1. When I refer to “localhost,” I mean the Nucleus set up on my actual local machine, not the Nucleus set up on AWS. I mentioned this to clarify that USD Composer can only write to the Nucleus on AWS.
  2. I am trying to save from USD Composer running on my local machine to the Nucleus on AWS. The issue is that I cannot write files from the local USD Composer to the Nucleus on AWS. When I add a cube or other prims to a new file in the local USD Composer and try to save it to the Nucleus on AWS, the USD file is created, but the prims like the cube are not saved, resulting in an empty USD file.
  3. I am using Nucleus Enterprise.
  4. I was not aware of the official NVIDIA AMI, so I am not using it. Do you think using it would resolve the issue?
  5. Since I am an NPN, I cannot contact Enterprise support.
  6. I want to deploy Nucleus on AWS so that my team members can use it collaboratively. What do you mean by the normal OS of the EC2? Are you referring to Ubuntu?

Thanks for checking this issue.

I have confirmed the connection to Nucleus on AWS. I was able to connect to Nucleus on AWS from the browser and Nucleus Navigator on my local machine, and I could upload, download, and delete files.

Where should I input --vv for the Kit application? Could you please provide detailed instructions? Should it be during the build process like .\repo.bat build --vv, or during the launch?

To check if it was a port issue, I allowed access from all ports on both the reverse proxy server and the Nucleus server, but the same error occurred, and I couldn’t write to Nucleus on AWS from USD Composer. Therefore, I don’t think it’s a port issue.
Additionally, I have confirmed that it is not an issue with folder access permissions.

Initially, I tried setting both the Nucleus server and the reverse proxy server OS to Ubuntu, but I couldn’t install Nitro Enclaves on the reverse proxy server. Therefore, I chose Amazon Linux 2 for the reverse proxy server, and I was able to start Nucleus on AWS.

I have installed NGINX on the Amazon Linux 2 reverse proxy server and confirmed that it is running.
Where can I find the NGINX reverse proxy that can be downloaded from NGC that you mentioned? I couldn’t find it myself, so it would be helpful if you could provide a link or some guidance.

[Additional Information]
In USD Composer 2023.2.5(Omniverse Launcher) and 107.2(Kit SDK), when the save operation for a USD file fails, the following logs are output in USD Composer, and the file is created.

  1. In USD Composer, the following log is output:

[Info] [omni.client.plugin] Tick: provider_nucleus: Failed omni1CreateAsset(omniverse://nucleus.mycompany-omniverse.com/Users/username/test.usd):
[Error] [omni.usd] ERROR! Failed to save layer omniverse://nucleus.mycompany-omniverse.com/Users/username/test.usd due to permission issue.
[Info] [omni.usd] USD saving failed

  1. Sometimes, only the Info line is output, and the Error is not output (the result is the same):

[Info] [omni.client.plugin] Tick: provider_nucleus: Failed omni1CreateAsset(omniverse://nucleus.mycompany-omniverse.com/Users/username/test.usd):

  1. The file is created.
  • Size: …Byte
  • Creation Date: …
  • Created by: username
  • Modified by: username
  • Only the header line “#usda 1.0” is output

Ok there is a lot here, so let me go through it.

  1. You are using Enterprise Nucleus, but you are not an Enterprise Customer? It sounds like you should become one.
  2. You are trying to set up a small team Nucleus Server on an EC2. For how many people? This team will be using local hardware and saving up to a central Nucleus Server on EC2?
  3. Yes there are official AMIs. We highly recommend you using them, but this is more for RTX Servers, not Nucleus Servers.
  4. What is an NPM ?
  5. It sounds like you have not followed the install docs for Nucleus exactly, if you have not Installed Nitro Enclaves and the NGINX Reverse Proxy. We do NOT support you skipping this step.

We’ll have to look at the AWS deployment to see if it has changed. You should be able to install Nitro Enclaves. It is required. Can you give us more details specifically on this?

Thank you for your detailed response. Here are my answers to your questions:

  1. I am using Enterprise Nucleus, but I am a member of the NPN (NVIDIA Partner Network) and not an Enterprise Customer. Therefore, I cannot receive Enterprise support.
  2. Our team consists of four people, and each of us uploads USD files from our local machines to Nucleus on AWS.
  3. What do you mean by “not for Nucleus Servers”? I am willing to try using the official AMI, but will it allow us to save files from USD Composer to Nucleus on AWS? Also, the deployment steps for Nucleus on AWS (Nucleus on Amazon EC2 — Omniverse Nucleus) do not specify an AMI. Is there any documentation that specifies the OS or AMI?
  4. NPM stands for NVIDIA Partner Network, and we are NVIDIA partners. We have an Enterprise license but cannot use Enterprise support.
  5. Nitro Enclaves and NGINX are installed and confirmed to be working on the reverse proxy server (OS: Amazon Linux 2). What do you mean by the NGINX provided by NGC that you mentioned yesterday?

Thank you for your assistance.

I analyzed the logs using the --vv option. The analysis compares the successful save of a USD file on the localhost Nucleus of the local machine and the failed save of a USD file on the Nucleus on AWS. Is it possible to start the server with the verbose option as well?

When the write is successful, writeFile() seems to be executed three times as shown below:

And, I have something to worry about an issue:
2025-06-05 04:32:22 [43,859ms] [Verbose] [omni.client.plugin] Tick: core: Request 1514: writeFile(omniverse://nucleus.dentsusoken-omniverse.com/Users/username/cone.usd) returned Error: Access Denied (version ‘’, 33005 bytes)

The fact that the version is an empty string ‘’ might also be an issue.
When successful, the version contains a string (revision number?).

If you know anything please let me know.

Hi sho2125,

I’d like to take a step back for a moment and focus on just the AWS infrastructure and Nucleus software before we dive into the other issues.

Based on the notes in this thread, I understand that you have the following configured:

1 Amazon Linux EC2 instance which is your reverse proxy server
1 Ubuntu 22.04 EC2 instance which is your Enterprise Nucleus Server

A few questions:

  • Do I have the above server assumption correct? Additionally, are these just base EC2 instances or did you use Marketplace AMIs to stand them up?
  • For the reverse proxy, did you use our sample NGINX configuration file that we provide within the Enterprise Nucleus Server artifact?
  • Which version of the Enterprise Nucleus Server artifact are you using? (The version is in the filename of the artifact you downloaded from NGC, and it’s also available within the VERSION file that is just outside the base_stack folder - just cat the file for the version information.)

Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks!
Drew

Hi Drew,

Thank you for your message. Here are my responses to your questions:

  • Your assumption about the server setup is correct. The EC2 instance is created on AWS by deploying stack resources using the const nucleusServerAMI = new ec2.GenericLinuxImage() function, following the steps in this link: Nucleus on Amazon EC2 — Omniverse Nucleus.
  • For the reverse proxy server, I connected via SSH and installed nginx using the sudo yum install nginx command. After installation, I modified the nginx.conf file as indicated in the steps from the link above. There were no errors, and I have confirmed that the service is functioning correctly.
  • The version of Nucleus is 2023.2.7. I checked NGC earlier, and the latest version is 2023.2.8. Do you think updating to the latest version might resolve the issue?

Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks!

Hi sho2125,

Thanks for confirming. I don’t believe upgrading will resolve the issue; I still suspect this is a configuration-based problem. I’m going to PM you directly to ask some specific questions about your configuration, which are too sensitive for you to share in the forum.

Stand by,
Drew

I hope this message finds you well. I am currently experiencing issues with saving USD files to the Nucleus server and would like to view detailed logs to better understand the problem. Could you please provide instructions on how to access and view the detailed logs for the Nucleus server?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,
Sho
