Using a different pyhsics simulator than FEM for soft bodies in Isaac Sim

Hello,

im trying to simulate soft bodies (simple cubes) in Isaac Sim. To my understanding, PhysX only supports FEM, but I’d like to simulate those soft bodies using XPBD and possibly VBD. Is that even possible, and if yes how would I approach this? My coding knowledge is pretty basic, but im trying to learn. Ive seen that Isaac Gym supports the use of NVIDIA Flex, which itself supports XPBD (If I understand that correctly), is it possible to create synthetic sensor data and such in Isaac Gym? Also Newton will support XPBD afaik, but that doesnt have a release date yet.

In another forum post (Computation of the forces between rigid and soft bodies with joint data) it appears as if the soft body simulation is done using XPBD, but I dont quite understand how.

Any pointers, tips, resources, etc. would be appreciated

Thanks, cody

Hi @cody-66, Thanks for posting your question. There is PBD support in Isaac Sim (PhysX), but it is an adapted version of the origin XPBD from Flex. Particle Simulation — Omniverse Extensions Check the tutorials out, that would be the best place to start. Particle based simulation is also coming through Newton (Warp) and that is where we will provide the most support. It should be released sometime in the next few months.
