Jetson Nano HDMI no output Signal

Hi, I see from the forum that I there has been some power issue with Jetson Nano, so I am currently using a 5V 4A adapter to power it through the jack instead of the USB. There is no signal from HDMI port whatsoever. I can assure that it is not the the HDMI adapter or wire issue, since it works fine on my computer. Also, I have the image from NVIDIA official website.

There are only few posts on this issue and they all fined for Return Authorization. I really hope I don’t have to return it. I have opened a support query on this and the reference number is 190523-000049.

Any additional information you need, I will do my best to provide it.

It isn’t unusual for video configuration to fail, but still have the system fully operational. HDMI adapters and monitors will behave differently on different systems, and especially on Jetsons. If this is VGA behind the HDMI adapter, then this is probably at fault as it cuts the wire used for automatic configuration. Desktop PCs will also operate with pretty much any video mode, but Jetsons only work with EDID modes (the data from automatic configuration is EDID), and the EDID mode pool excludes all interlaced modes while desktop PCs allow interlaced (that’s just one example).

You should probably give a detailed description of the monitor and HDMI adapter, and also see if you can ping the Jetson or ssh in. My guess is that the Nano is probably working, but video is not.

An additional method of access would be serial console if you happen to have a serial UART cable handy (3.3V).

Pinging or sshing a jetson in install mode won’t do much, I am afraid…
However, If you happen to have another monitor you can try it with, it can be a good indication. I had similar problems with HP server, it only liked expensive monitors…
you can carry the jetson+powersupply to a friends house and try it. probably easier then carrying the monitor.

Linuxdev, thank you for your reply. So here is the development after I posted this:

  1. serial communication result in gibberish. the setup is 1152008N1. Apparently, a communication channel has been established. I tried all kind of configuration on that serial port, but none would work. I tried the same setup on raspberry pi, it works fine.

  2. I happen to work in a lab with loads of monitors, I tried quite a few of them, none would work. that is how I come to the conclusion that there might be something wrong with the board. I bought it from arrow.com, suppose to be brand new, but yesterday I examed the board closely, but find that there are some sort of used mark on the heat sink, which is quite disappointing. It is certainly not from me since I am female and highly appreciative of all my stuff.

  3. how to I ssh it without knowing its IP?

ping can still work… you need to look at the dhcp table on the router and see of the jetson acquired an ip address. won’t help you too much. There was another guy on the forum that had exactly the same problem:

A new development:

I was able to figure out why I had gibberish. I had a few 220V power supply nearby therefore, the 50Hz interference corrupted the data. I solve it by shielding the communication line with tin foil. So now the serial communication works fine.

However, another issue comes up:

the booting process stuck at:

I tried to reburn the image, but that issue persist.Please advice on how can I solve it. Thanks

I am still searching on this error message but there doesn’t see to be that many. Is that something you’ve ever seen? Also I reburned the image but the issue persist.

Had this snd it was power supply. If you can, try another. Even a good 2.4a one should work for booting. The nano is very sensitive to power supplies. There are posts on the forum of people using 5v 4a that didn’t work and then trying with another (actually cheaper one, the amazon 9$) and it worked.

I have no idea, but as far as I know it shouldn’t matter (the amps). Just beware that some of the higher current ones are designed to work properly under over 50% load. … Btw, i looked at my terminal now and this is the last message i get as well on successful boot, so it might not be the case - might still be a faulty hardware.

FYI, this is not actually an error and can be expected:

8.708297 random 7 urandom warnings missed due to ratelimiting

It is basically just a note that in order to keep other parts of the system running smoothly it wasn’t allowing the random number generator to hold CPU time as much as it wanted (“urandom” is pseudo random…it uses an entropy pool from various system actions to emulate randomness, e.g., mouse movement…if it blocks it means the entropy pool isn’t filling up as fast as it is being consumed and will be blocking too long).

The 50Hz catch was excellent…tinfoil hats might not do much for people, but it sure helps cables.

Incidentally, much of the power supply failure of otherwise working supplies revolves around short instantaneous current spike requirements even though averages are not all that large. In some cases tighter regulation at a lower max current delivery will be an improvement over larger current availability which isn’t tightly regulated. Larger current availability tends to imply that if the percent regulation is the same as another supply that it will still regulate better than something rated at lower current. If you add lots of USB devices pulling power, then you need more average…if you get failures only under random conditions, especially under startup, then probably higher current would help, but possibly a very large capacitor right at the power connection would also do the job.

I soldered 1000 and then 2500uf,after knowing 1000 doesn’t work, capacitor to the power jack in parallel , that message is still there. Basically I need a crappy power supply which allows spikes?

Just the opposite…the capacitor limits spikes. You need a higher quality supply to avoid extremely fast spikes. But, if you are talking about the urandom error, this isn’t an error and has no relation to boot or power. When a seemingly “good” power supply fails, and it has high enough average current delivery capacity, then it means it needs better regulation. The capacitor helps with that.

The partition would be part of the SD card creation process. Something in the process to create that SD card went wrong. There is more than one way to create the SD card, so I couldn’t describe every possible failure.

If you were transferring an image directly, then the partitioning would be from the image. If you were creating an image (including directly copying to the SD card with files instead of a binary image), then partitioning would be required prior to that and would probably be where the process went wrong.

here is my log, I am using a 5V6A supply, plus added capacitor. Also, I am using an oscilloscope to monitor the voltage change. I set the trigger at 4.96, falling edge, one shot mode. It did not capture any voltage drop when the board hang.
